What runs an electric gate
Four parts decide whether a gate still works in year ten: the opener, the power feeding it, the way it stops for a car, and the way you get in when the power is out.
The opener
This is the motor, and its whole job is weight and distance. A swing gate and a rolling gate ask different things of it, and a motor sized to the gate on paper instead of the gate in your driveway is why so many electric gates end up propped open by year five. Ask what your gate weighs, how far it travels, and what the opener is rated to move. If nobody can tell you, that is your answer.
The power
A motor at the end of the driveway needs electricity out there with it, which means either a trench back to the house or a solar panel at the post. Either way that is real work and it belongs on the quote in writing: the trench, the conduit, the hookup, and who is doing each one. It is the line most often left vague, and the one that turns into an extra bill later.
Stopping for a car
A powered gate has to know when something is in its way and back off. That is a safety reverse, and it earns its keep on the one day a car is halfway through or a grandchild is somewhere you did not expect. Ask what stops the gate, ask to watch it tested before the crew leaves, and ask whether it is in the price or a separate line. Anything that moves under its own power needs it.
When the power is out
Texas loses power, and a gate with no plan for that is a gate you cannot get through. There are two answers and most setups use both: a battery that keeps it running a while, and a manual release that lets you push the gate open by hand. Ask which you are getting, ask to be shown the release, and ask where the key for it lives. Better to know that on a mild afternoon than at 6 a.m. in an ice storm.
Automatic gates, and the openers behind them
An automatic gate is two purchases in one, the gate and the system that moves it, and photographs of the second half are hard to find anywhere. These show both.
Watch the posts. On an automatic gate they carry more than weight, they carry repeated movement, and a post sized for a fence is not a post sized for a powered gate. On the slide gates, look at where the gate goes when it opens: that run-back space is the constraint most driveways impose.

One more thing, since nobody in this market says it out loud. Texas does not issue a state license for fence contractors. Any fence company here can print the word licensed on a truck, and most of the time it means a city registration or it means nothing at all.
